New Beginnings envisions a world free of violence and oppression, reflected in peaceful relationships and communities. Founded in 1976, New Beginnings’ mission is to empower survivors and mobilize community awareness and action to end domestic violence. We are the only full service agency in Seattle whose primary mission is to serve domestic violence survivors. With over 40 years of established history, New Beginnings has become a leading force in the movement to end domestic violence and has grown to include a full range of services for survivors. On average, New Beginnings serves over 10,000 women, children, and men each year.

Values
As an organization with roots in the feminist movement, we believe that everyone has the right to live free of oppression, to receive the same opportunities as others, and to exercise their own personal choice.

Trauma Sensitivity
We understand that many people involved with New Beginnings and in the community at large have experienced trauma in their lives. We strive to validate the experiences of both adults and children by providing services to them through a trauma-informed lens. We use the framework of Trauma-Informed Services* to inform our interactions with each other, participants, and service providers, as well as the community at large.

Peace
We oppose the use of violence or manipulation in any form, especially as a means of control over others. We recognize that violence is deeply rooted in our society and world, and manifests in physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, economic and political forms. We believe that it is a human right to live free from violence, and we are committed to creating a culture in which everyone’s human rights are respected and upheld.

Awareness
We recognize the presence of oppression, and its foundation in judgments based on race, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, class, and disability, among other discriminatory markers. We recognize that many people experience an intersection of oppressions, which can be fostered by both individuals and society’s institutions. We strive to eradicate oppression, including systemic oppression, which is implicit within our society and often unrecognized.

Racial Equality
Domestic violence is rooted in patriarchy and sexism, impacting people of all backgrounds and experiences. Yet African Americans, Indigenous Peoples and other People of Color, who have inevitably experienced institutional oppression and discrimination due to racism, are especially vulnerable to domestic violence and must overcome the greatest barriers to safety and self-determination. As we advocate for and support survivors with marginalized identities, including women, the LGBTQI+ community and immigrants, we will ensure that the voices and perspectives of People of Color within these communities are centered in order to decrease systemic barriers. Gender Equality
We recognize that the inequality and oppression of women is a key factor in the perpetuation of domestic violence, with negative repercussions for the health of the entire community. We commit to working for the full equality of women.

Collaboration
We believe that our efforts have the greatest potential for impact when we work together with other organizations and the community at large, to bring awareness and accountability to all around the issue of domestic violence

Opportunity
We affirm and promote the leadership of all who have been marginalized, including domestic violence survivors, within the organization and the community. We value the experiences and perspectives of children, and strive to help their voices be heard.
